Rick Holland has been a serial collaborator since he started writing poems, and has worked with Brian Eno since 2002.
It has always been Rick's aim to bridge some of the stickier history of 'poetry' and present it in new forms. His poetry seethes with honesty and reflects his own wish to read poetry that does not rely for reference on an in depth knowledge of any small or specialised world.
The 'Speaker Flowers' installation with Brian Eno at Marlborough House in May 2010 was one such form, moving sounds and words into a deserted and once grand grade 1 listed building. Open for the duration of the Brighton Festival it welcomed thousands of people through doors that had been shut for many years, and allowed them to walk, think and sit among Brian Eno's generated sounds and Rick Holland's words, in several coloured rooms, without the kind of linearity or explanation that faces many audiences or viewers. Visitors who could spent hours there, and many returned for more than one visit.
'Story the Flowers' presents a selection of the work of Rick Holland in a more traditional format, with a placement in London, Dorset, Mumbai and less tangibly, in moments of community and commune in those places. In its pages are moments of reflection for the restless soul, and an invitation to join the story not just read it. It recognises the need to reassess the stories we tell ourselves and celebrates the exciting prospect of telling ourselves new stories as we must in order to properly face the challenges of a quickly changing world.
Its design is by London designer and typographer Sam Blunden, and it was printed at Calvert's Co-operative, E2, in May 2010. The book is now on general sale, from a limited edition first print run.
